Named after Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel (Marseilles, France) who discovered this comet on 1869 November 27, Lewis Swift (Warner Observatory, New York) who discovered the comet on 1880 October 11, and the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program.
